& I’m late with a great excuse for my boss…
Smith Newton to be at the Washington DC auto show… so cool
know anyone at Staples?
I sent them some ideas a couple of years ago… I think it’s time for a demonstration site at a local store. Not all of us can be the super sales guy like David Cabanban (Sanyo)… he rocks. Lots of being there with the bike shops.
But we’re not finished yet. We have good bikes locally too.. and if we get the hub motors right you never know what will happen next…
UK… Smith… I see a trend. More to come
Thanks!
we’re hiring… good student part time jobs and action with international flavor
location games… more than one way to achieve a verifiable timeclock and have fun doing it. Sure beats the tedious way. I think there is potential to go back to the “honor” system…. trust and verify. 😉
Good Point – Bosssss I'm heeeerrrre!
Chris you continually amaze me, how do you manage to bring top content, cutting edge stuff, constantly? You are a serious journal of what’s goin’ down “my man!” Good doesn’t even begin to cover how fantastically cool your material is.
Chris your content is so strong, so good, so clean, so useful, I’m serious, I taught undergrads for Dr. Watkins at Tourou University and dude, your quality is smokin mine and we considered ourselves pretty strong professional trainers. Folks who are listening to your training are getting substantial material presented with a subtle flair. Absolutely excellent!
Chris have any quick stuff I could get on YELP? AC asked me to dig into it? Man this featured content writer stuff turned out to be more of a time thing than a money thing really quick like…next time something like that comes along – kick my butt would ya? YELP at me if ya get a sec…appreciate ya Chris…
U want me to send u a friend request on yelp? Sure
I appreciate the compliment!
It comes from decades of being an old business war horse, lots of
battle scars, lol
LOL
Hi Chris,
nice post!
You're right to mention privacy – however privacy with location is something which is solveable. On Foursquare (as with anything else where trust is involved) you should be careful who you're friends with; and you can checkin without announcing to the world at large where you actually are. As Warren says – don't share what you don't want others to see.
You don't mention any of the benefits of this type of technology. Imho it's not just about telling your friends where you are; there's much more to it than that. Think about how this can be tied into rewards/loyalty schemes; take a look at this Mashable post for instance: http://mashable.com/2010/01/13/tasti-d-lite-tas…
You also hit on an interesting thing; isn't “checking in” just extra hassle? True, but the incentive must be there to make it workwhile. However, I'm sure that the ability to auto checkin is just around the corner (http://www.joelhughes.com/twitter-foursquare-an…)
Joel
Joel your exactly correct, yes theres a ton of stuff companies can do with
this information. I think that companies will come up with ways to possibly
know who is using these programs so they can help get better ratings.
I recently visited the Las Vegas Hilton, as soon as I stepped onto the
gaming floor I got a push message, greeting me and offering me goodies. I'm
not sure if it came through my bluetooth or what but I can see thats a big
part of the future. A virtual meet and greet handshake if you will.
Thanks
Chris
Have you tried out http://justbought.it?
Interesting! I've been using Foursquare for a few weeks now and have actually gotten quite into it. At some places it is a hassle, but a few days ago I found my first place that had a special for Foursquare users — 10% off my dinner, which was a nice bonus.
The Chicago Tourism Dept. also has a cool tie-in with Foursquare, one being On Location — users can unlock a special badge when they check into 5 of 10 filming locations of movies filmed in Chicago, like the Dark Knight. When you check it, it also pops up with tips about how/when the location was used in the movie — a very cool, fun tie in to explore the city.

Welcome to the future pretty neato
Chris sorry I didn't get to meet you at Lavo last week. Regarding the whole robbery issue though, the public said the same thing when the answering machine came out. Privacy will always be an issue but technology must still move forward.
I'd love to discuss more you with – Gowalla especially sometime.
@shewchuk
Anytime – thats an interesting point – feel free to call me at 310-997-2204

Glad you listed @Whrrl – it's my favorite LBS. Have you heard of My Town? I play around with it, but find it is hard to connect w others.

Location apps aren’t only about gaming and check ins, even though that is what you focused on for these geo-specific services.
My friends at Geodelic have developed a mobile application (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/geodelic/id348283341?mt=8) and publishing platform for location-specific services which give consumers contextually relevant information, deals and offers, just like you mentioned in your reply to one of the comments. The app is available on iPhone and launched originally on the Android platform with myTouch as “T-Mobile Sherpa”. Venues, like airports and casinos, in your example, can push information to help a customer orient to key services like ATMs and restrooms. Tourism bureaus can also provide lists and maps of dog parks, parking garages, and restaurants, and simultaneously show their Yelp reviews. At the airport, you can see which terminal has which services, and departure and arrival information, as well as an individual airline’s Twitstream.
Currently in a private beta (shh…) is a DIY app platform for creating your own local directory, called a GeoGuide. http://www.geodelic.com/geoguides.php
When a location is providing you contextually relevant information on your mobile phone the experience can be truly beneficial, and not just another task, like remembering to pick up milk.
Great point about the leaving the house empty and eventually employers stalking you. Did u happen to catch my check-ins when I was in Las Vegas?
If you already got your life on radar, and you don’t have enemies that are willing to stalk you, then why not? Another way to put it, is like leaving breadcrumbs for another person. OR like a dog peeing on his territory.. lol
I never post ‘illegal’ stuff.. lol
The idea behind these things is not a game but to let others know your location. We are connected here on Twitter. If I happen top be in your town on business and I post I am having lunch 2 blocks from your location, you may want to stop by and have lunch or introduce yourself.
In that manner the tool is useful.
I do not have a smart phone yet so I have not fully checked out these services but I am sure you have some control of who sees your location. Hopefully your friends are not retweeting it.
I would love captions or transcripts of your video clips. I want to know more about location-based apps.
