Entrepreneurs live to fix and dream the seemingly impossible. We should teach kids how to problem solve and create in life.
I put this in to help us think that in education we HAVE TO STOP THE “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” EDUCATION. We need make it fit for different people.
I agree Chris – I teach my children to be their own bosses. I have had no greater reward than those projects I took on on my own. Although sometimes life forces one to enjoy the comfort of employment I encourage everyone to at least have a side business. One day that business can become your safety net, not unlike learning a “trade” or “profession” when you are a star athlete. The whole educational system needs to be looked at, but what would you expect from “organized” teachers. Funny how many of the “bad” expect to ride the coat tails of the good ones. Someone needs to start grading the teachers as well as the system in whole.
Another great post from the voice of reason. I majored in economics and business and when I got my first job I realized how little I knew about business and entrepreneurship. Education should focus more on reasoning/thinking skills. I liked your example about passing high school You essentially did a cost benefit analysis and determined there was more value for you to not spend time in a course you felt didn't matter.
Thanks Todd, one thing that always dumbfounded me when I would hire
salespeople that were fresh out of college with a “sales degree,” I would
usually be firing these folks after a couple months because 100% of the time
they couldn't sell their way out of a paper bag. Finally I quit hiring them
if they were newly graduated. Sales is a people business, you cant learn
that in a textbook.
I'm a teacher and I totally agree. I also think that's it's going to take an overhaul of the school system to get schools to teach for today's world. School systems are concerned with high math and reading standardized scores.
So how about starting your own school?
Hey Chris,
I am an entrepreneur. Wish that they would change how they spell that word. I have owned my business for three years and have never looked back. I am only going to college to learn the business tools of the trade. College is REALLY easy because I know probably 60-70% of what they are teaching. The rest I love. Employing yourself is the way of the future man!
Great thoughts, Chris. I agree – divergent thinking and self employment go together like coffee and cream – however, I think the only way to accomplish this is to start your own school, as mentioned…
@ChrisVoss I don’t agree w/ intentionally failing out of school but I am passionate abt kids starting businesses & turning their passions into profits!
