Like it or not Obamacare is going to bring some interesting disruption to our employment economy, I think in a major way. Recently an article was posted on HuffPo about a young woman who was stuck working part time for benefits until Obamacare kicked in. Once Obamacare kicked in, her dead end job cancelled her insurance that was the only thing keeping her there and now with the freedom to pick and choose her jobs, not based on healthcare offerings, she’s found new freedom in full time employment.

Being self employed and single all my life has given me the extensive freedom to do whatever I want in life. It’s given me perspective on this for 25+ years. As an employer, I was always disturbed when I would regularly find people who would work dead end jobs miserably just so they could have adequate health care for their families. In my sales companies, we would have guys making tons of money in sales but would have to quit to lower paying jobs because they needed secure full coverage. I’ve watched many of people suffer through dead end jobs they hated to provide for their family.

Now with Obamacare, people will have a new sense of freedom to be able to change jobs and it will also be better for today’s employees. Employers will likely have to compete more on other fronts such as wages, job quality, etc. instead of locking people in with healthcare. What we will see out of these changes is more movement of people in the job market, more competitiveness from employers to keep and hire people, etc. This bodes massive changes for our economy.

This will help contribute to a new economy where its said that according to a recent Intuit study 40 Percent Of Americans Will Be Freelancers By 2020. I’m already seeing the growing freelance field my friends and markets already. Its an idea that will make companies have to be more competitive as retail brick and mortar institutions fall away.

As an employer you may want to rethink how competitive your business is to acquire and retain employees into the future.

What do you think?
