Nice post Chris – I think geo-apps could be the HUGE for local businesses if they are taught how to properly leverage it, however from my own testing, I have found the average user is just not seeing the benefit of Geo-apps. With Twitter, the average user tweets once per day and is on the service mainly to be updated on what their friends are doing, Geo Location generally comes across as a latitude and longitude on mobile handsets, rendering that feature just about useless. With Facebook.com dominating the social scene with status updates and all the features that come with it, there isn't much of a benefit to “checking in” on a service like foursquare. Some may even see it as intrusive due to privacy. If foursquare was smart, it would work directly with local businesses with an ad service similar to Facebook – where local businesses can target users based on demographic information offering up service specific coupons IE “5% off bill while user is mayor of establishment” and allow these ads to be sent based upon current geo location upon check-in of surrounding establishments. The only way I can see this happening is a partnership with a major distributor IE coke or pepsi.
I'm still exploring these services, but I am excited to see where it goes from here.
Edit: I just saw those photos you posted, it seems some of my ideas are already in effect – this is encouraging.

Great for anyone who wants inspiration and to learn so much from someone who has done an incredible array of experiences.” -Gary Shapiro, President and CEOConsumer Technology Association, producer of CES®

The benefit to user on Twitter or facebook is just as good as any
other update. When i update multiple people respond and discuss my
postings.
