I have the same reaction to this as I do to consultants who tell businesses (especially smaller businesses), “you HAVE to be on Facebook! You HAVE to be on Twitter.” Maybe, but not necessarily. It all depends on the specific communications goal of the business. If there are limited resources and organic search is not a primary lead-generation tool, then maybe to say they MUST be on G+ is an unnecessary diversion of resources and strategic focus. The big caveat that needs to be presented with these sorts of posts: All of these platforms — Twitter, G+, Facebook, blogs, Flickr, etc. etc. etc. — are tools. Are they the best tools for addressing the unique strategic business need? Maybe. Maybe not. Focus first on the strategic need, then the prioritization of the tools can necessarily follow.
Hi Craig, you have an excellent point – its hard to spread limited resources around all the social media channels for small business. If they were to attempt to be everywhere – 4hours a day would be eaten by social media & no billable work! We think its important to claim your space, test & try it and find what works best for you…as you say above – what is the most strategic for your business. This is definitely the best way to ensure a good ROI . On the flip…we also agree with what Chris is saying…google + is very important – and is likely to be key for search engine results. So we would recommend – est and try – find your best ROI and focus. Secondly, if the resources allow – then give a secondary tier 30 mins a week. For example – if twitter is working best for you – its your daily tool…but still once a week try and add a different post to facebook & google + to maintain your presence…keep testing…who knows where tomorrow’s business drivers will be. Don’t want all your eggs in one basket….don’t want to miss opportunities. Have a nice day 🙂
It sounds like the only reason to be on Google+ is if you’re waiting for people to search your company name. There’s nothing about industry status or stature, keywords, or gaining new customers. If someone is already searching “The Chris Voss Show,” who cares if Google+ shows up #2 AFTER your website? If you told me someone searched Media Consultant, and Google+ put you at #2, that’d be great….but if someone’s searching you, yeah, I sure hope you come up at the top.
