UPDATE 3/11/10:
Last Year my Post: https://thechrisvossshow.com/?p=867 In one of my most popular posts, I discussed how Web 2.0 is now lessened by Social Media’s ability to drive traffic over search engines. Its the new standard. Here is a good example, you can see Social Media is now driving sometimes several times the amount of traffic to sites over search engines. Glad you listened to me?

Exactly Chris, if you concentrate more on Social Media, the search engine ranking part will take care of itself as more people share it virally.

A few thoughts… SEO is a multi-pronged approach. I wouldn’t just cull it down to “buying ads.” it’s SO much more than that. Twitter can help a lot but is a small part of a larger strategy. Twitter brings qualified traffic who tend to spend more time on a site than average. I think it’s dangerous to completely discount the other elements of a good search engine optimization strategy. Twitter helps, but isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of SEO so to speak. Let’s not forget the power of the search engines.

Hey Chris,
When I first saw this Tweet, I was going to “challenge” your assessment, since Google PR has been a key driver in all my web properties getting traffic. The just today (12-21-09) I read in BusinessWeek where Google and Bing are adding $25 Million large to the Twitter coffers to be able to attach their dataming algorithms to Twitter and present these data points in RT to the rest of the world. Hence, your concept is valid in more ways than one. Bravo!
Thanks, I didn't know about bit.ly – I love to track my stats, I'll try this out!

there are many … Each page on your web site should focus on a different set of keyword phrases. …

what are your social media marketing goals, or what should they be? …. Now, do the same with three of your largest competitors. How do you rank against them? …
its not surprising that you rank for your own name. its unlikely that you would have much competition for that particular search term
Is this accurate? Don't get me wrong – social media is important but as important as rank? Not sure i agree. Most of social media is about interaction and often people sign up to businesses facebooks and twitters but how many of these actually convert to sales? How many people go onto their social media accounts and look to buy something? Not many! Most social media is used for exactly that – social interaction.
For businesses it is a nice complement to a strong online presence but definitely not the solution! The examples you quote highlight that more than i ever could. News service companies will ofcourse drive higher volumes through social media than google because, from personal experience, my twitter account is flooded throughout the day with news updates. And i click on them to read a bit of news. I'm not in a buying cycle or even interested in a product etc. The only actual direct traditional consumer purchase product you have here is Gap and it shows more referrals from Google.
Social media is great. I love it. But to say you should focus on this and ignore rank? Unless you have NO business to 'sell' than it simply wont work. Businesses are online for one reason – money. You wont find as much of it through social media as you will from search – fact!

OK Man – you're the one who fussed at us about not putting our phone numbers in our video's…DUDE- and I needed your number…;-) Wanna slap me yet 😉 I wanted to call you Chris…I was just feelin' a little emotional about this new video man…and I jus' wanted to reach out to you, and I thought, “surely Chris will put his number in this video man…as much as he fussed at us about it…” but it isn't there…I'm gonna go eat a donut now…whlie I wait on my Isagenix to get here…
Mark: I'm so glad you asked Chris that…NOW…just hang on…have watched Chris for about a year now…never have I seen anyone who knows their stuff better.
VSO- why would we internally rank against customers, wouldnt a better metric be to baseline the niche- then do an external comparison of media penetration based on the various known forms of media, and then, compare the internal figures? How large would you say you's want that baseline to be, and would you use Excel or Project or what? 😉
Saweet Darren- Nice Blog – Love the header- VERY cool…now to the issue – of course what you're saying makes sense, CSteven Tucker (chicago) has really made a science out of internal driving of commercialization, which is what I think both you and Chris are referring to, just different semantics. Basically I can say one thing to ten people and have it reach ten thousand, that's media power isn't it? Given that ratio, if I help those ten intensive their spread…well…network time.
Yeah and the really cool thing is that “BING” goes “BING” – wow wee, now there's a reason to use a search engine if ever I heard of one! Are you sure that the search engines that are using artificial intelligence are utilizing datamining algo's in them- because- my suspicion is that it's a comb-bot and that content amount is one of the significant measures it employs meaning Chris nailed it all the way? Your commments really, REALLY, cool, don't get me wrong, not criticizing at all what you said, that's right, but Chris is onto something about content and weight.
Uh its on my 'about' page and my 'hire Chris Voss' pages at top.
Mark the point is not to ignore rank. I didnt say that. Yes and people are shown to 66% more likely buy off of Twitter and social networks. So yes its happening. Along with the graph above. Thanks.
Here's a perspective from the retail side – If I rank #1 in Google for a competitive term relative to my product, social media will likely be a relatively small driving force.
However, say I fall to #5 for the same term, social media will make up a larger percentage of the traffic, end up past the first page and social media might dominate in terms of traffic.
News and other things that are shared freely will show different patterns naturally. Of course there are variables such as influence.

Yes I do believe that Social Media and the Internet is causing a world shift in all areas of business and personal integrity.
I agree with many of the posts that point out the fact that these are media sites. These are references – “Read this” type results. Shoppers are still going to go to the search sites to look first, then get feedback before they buy from their social networks. I have my doubts that the shopping experience will start with a “Buy this” message from a social site.
Super article/vid thanks! You’re right – its the new standard. It’s exciting to see small and large companies take advantage of emerging marketing strategies and the amazing tools that are created daily to help them do that. We are building an app to help businesses grow on Facebook. Our project helps, for instance, sell products/services and display company information: http://www.splashtab.com/
I still think its too early in the game to say poo-poo to page rank and rely only on social media prowess. With Google Instant, Caffeine and now the mobile web becoming so prevalent, not have an inventory of quality P5+ back links and the PR that comes with it might still be a little dangerous.
I have found the best ways for marketing are FREE http://www.ImarketDaily.com
There are many approaches to website or business promotion. The traditional digital approach has been to (1)build a site, SEO it and the promote it through Social Media. Conversely you can do the exact opposite; You can (2)promote your services through social and then work on solidifying your brand with a strong site and SEO. Yet another tactic (3) is (if you have the resources) to do these things concurrently. I believe the situation dictates the method.
very interesting discussion, good to hear so many different views and opinions.
Any more of your articles on Social Media coming up soon please? See you on Twitter. Julia x
I post 1-2 times a day on social media.
I also found that Twitter can send enormous traffic to a new website. The one I am using for this post right now has stats from Tweets. If your site is not using Google Adsense it is great. If you want to know why, you can always drop me a message
